Emotional Support, Wherever You Are
Therapy in Virginia for What You're Already Carrying
Maybe you're the person everyone else calls when things fall apart, and somehow you always have it together, at least on the outside. You've done the work. You've read the books, maybe sat across from another therapist before, and you can explain exactly why you shut down during conflict or brace yourself before anyone even raises their voice. What you haven't found is a way to actually feel different, not just understand why you feel the way you do.
Maybe boundaries still come with a wave of guilt, even when you know they're reasonable. Maybe you're exhausted from holding everything together for everyone else, and you're not even sure when that became your job. Maybe you've noticed you can be in a room full of people who care about you and still feel completely alone.
If this sounds familiar, you are in the right place.

LCSW Serving Richmond, VA
Meet Kristine, a Therapist Serving Virginia
I'm Kristine Madu, LCSW, and I founded Attuned Healing Therapy Center to be the kind of steady presence I once needed myself. For the past ten years, I've worked with adults whose patterns started long before adulthood, in childhood homes where love came with conditions, attention came with strings attached or simply non-existent.
I'm not here to hand you a five-step plan or tell you what's wrong with you. I'm here to understand you first, the way you actually experience your life, before we talk about what to change. My approach blends person-centered, psychodynamic, and nervous-system-focused work, because insight alone rarely changes how your body responds under stress.
I believe repair, honesty, and vulnerability aren't signs of weakness. They're the actual mechanics of real change, not signs that something is wrong with you.
A Trauma-Informed Approach, Rooted in Experience
Why I Became a Trauma-Informed Therapist
I didn't start out planning to become a therapist. I trained as a teacher first, and along the way, I went through my own year of CBT and exposure therapy for social anxiety. That experience showed me something teaching never had: how much it mattered to have one safe adult in the room, someone steady enough to be trusted.
That realization sent me back to school for social work. I started out wanting to help children who had experienced trauma, but I found the work with their parents draining in ways I hadn't expected. What I discovered instead was how rewarding it felt to work with adults whose inner child still needed exactly what I'd once needed myself: to be believed, to be understood, and to have someone stay steady while they figured out what came next.
I'm also in my own ongoing process of healing from complex trauma, which is part of why I understand this work from more than one side.

Compassionate Therapy, At Your Pace
Our Collaborative Approach to Therapy
Sessions with us tend to feel unhurried. We won't rush you into vulnerability before you're ready, and we won't treat your coping mechanisms, the overthinking, the people-pleasing, the shutting down, as problems to eliminate on day one. Those patterns kept you safe once, and we start there.
We work collaboratively, which means you're never just receiving instructions. We'll ask questions, share what we're noticing, and check in about whether the pace feels right, adjusting as we go. Depending on what you need, that might mean weekly sessions that build slowly over time, or a more concentrated intensive format when your timeline calls for something different.
Early sessions usually focus on building safety and understanding your history at a pace your nervous system can actually tolerate. Deeper work, like EMDR or somatic processing, only comes once that foundation feels steady enough to hold it.
Therapy for High-Functioning Adults
Who We Support in Virginia
We work best with high-functioning Virginia adults who look like they have it together and are privately exhausted from maintaining that. You might already recognize yourself in some of this:
- Anxiety or perfectionism that's been running the show for years, even when things look fine on paper.
- Burnout from over-functioning at work, at home, or both, with little relief from better routines or more self-care.
- Guilt around setting boundaries, or a pattern of over-giving that leaves little left for yourself.
- Relationship patterns that repeat: fear of abandonment, difficulty trusting closeness, or pulling away right when things get real.
- Trauma responses like hypervigilance, shutdown, or dissociation that talk therapy alone hasn't touched.
- A quiet sense of not being enough, no matter how much you accomplish.
If even one of these sounds like you, you're exactly who we built this practice for.
